How do i change numbers in text format to number format?

I have a column of numbers in text format. I need them in number format - IF
I use Format - cells - number cat. - it does not work

Any other suggestions?

- copy an empty cell
- select your numbers
- goto 'Edit - Paste Special' and choose 'Add'
