Default format styles

I am unable to use the formats $ , % from the toolbar. If I click on them, I
get a message saying :"Style not found" Currently I have to go into format
cells in order to apply any of them in a worksheet.
I have tried under Tools, Style- modify, add, but I still get the same
message. Could someone advice me?
Thanks,
