guide. Or are you asking what Fourier Analysis is used for?

As for examples, any reasonable stats or systems engineering text covering
analysis of periodic time series or signal analysis should contain detailed,
real world examples. You may also be able to find lots of sun spot analyses
on the web (sun spot series were the main data source in intro time series
courses way back when I was in grad school).
