=subtotal() respects the cells hidden by an autofilter.

I think I'd just use those outlining symbols (to the left of the row numbers) to
hide details.

(I've taken to removing the autofilter on worksheets that have data|subtotal
applied. Sometimes people trust the results of their formulas without really
looking at them.)
