Default INDEX, user input?

I have an INDEX look up an item and put in a corosponding price. I would
like to have one item in the lookup to be able to have the user input a price
without wiping out the formula. Is it possible?
example
A-------B
shoe---5
sock---3
smell--allow input

The formula in the cell would have to be wiped out if there's something
being written over it. You can always use 2 columns though; one that the
user is free to mess with, and one that the user may not know about (or know
enough about not to mess with it, or lock the contents of them), and when
you are going to do calculations, you can use the protected column contents.

Hi
no this is not possible. You can't have a formula and a manual entered value
in the same cell

I thought that would be the case. Guess Ill add another non-INDEX line on
the quote sheet.

thank you,
