Default formula to find out the color an excel cell is highlighted?

Is there a way to count cells that have been highlighted similiar to using
the COUNTIF but instead of a variable checking for the formatting of a cell?

In Excel 2007 yes, in previous versions you would need VBA

Thanks Bob,

Do you know how to get the formula to automatically refresh as I am
highlighting?
