Default Conditoinal format trouble

I'm trying to get the conditional format to basically understand that if
ANY date is in a certain cell, let's say $k$3, the whole row should turn
gray. What's the language I should use in the "Formula is" for
conditional format for "IF a date here"?

The Conditional Formatting needs to be applied to all the cells in the range
you wish to color..........however, excel cannot distinguish a "date" from a
number. This formula, put in the CF dialog will color the cells if
"anything" other than 0 is put in K3.........

=$K3<0

Awesome. One last question. What's the language for "if nothing appears
in cell A3"? I tried =$a3<0, but it returned an error.
