Default Excel document was saved to word in error how do I get it back

Excel document was saved to Mircosoft word in error - when I try to open the
file it states tha file format is invalid. How do I retrieve this file as an
excel document?

I am afraid that the only thing you can do is to open the file in word, save
it as text and import it into excel using the import text wizard. You will
have lost all your formulas and format etc. but at least you have you values.
Are you sure you don't have a backup? ( e.g. created with autosave ?)
