problem office assistant

occasionally I get an error message on opening excel that there is a problem
in opening office assistant. If i shut down and reboot it is ok and office
assistant comes up. any solution to this problem perhaps this is my os
(windows 98 SE) or MS office 2000 problem

any suggestions.
