When I refer to a cell in another spreadsheet, the cell reference always
automatically defaults to absolute (e.g. $A$4). In most cases I don't want
the $ so have to manually remove them which is time consuming.

Is there a way to change the options in Excel 2003 so that the $'s don't
appear ?

The default is for relative referencing when the formula refers to a
worksheet in the 'same' workbook and absolute referencing if the formula
refers to a sheet in a 'different' workbook and I'm not aware of any way of
changing this behavour.

When you say 'in another spreadsheet' do you really mean in another workbook?

The quick way to change the reference style is to tap F4 repeatedly until
you get the reference style you want.
