when I create a formula using cells from a different workbook, excel
automatically uses absolute cell reference. Is there a setting that could change this to use relative cell refrence? |

I've never seen one. That's the way excel works.
If you select the formula (or parts of the formula) in the formula bar, you can hit F4 to cycle through 4 relative/absolulte addresses.
