Default Why is calculate showing in status bar at bottom of spreadsheet?

I have a spreadsheet where the calculate alert is showing down at the bottom
of the screen. I have calculations set to automatic in the options tab, but
it still shows up. Why is that, and is there something I can do that would
help clear that?

The issue is bigger than this, but I figured I'd better keep it simple to
start.

Thanks, Paul. I had iterations turned on. Turning that off showed me that I
had too many decision trees for the spreadsheet to figure. Turns out I
didn't need as many as I thought, so that helped lead me to clean up the
spreadsheet.

But as I said in my original post - this issue is manifold - I still have an
issue with the spreadsheet not saving all the conditional formatting. When I
try to save the file, it gives me a "Excel could not save all the data and
formatting you recently added to Book1.xls" error. If I go ahead and hit OK
to that error, it saves the file, but I loose about 75% of the conditional
formatting in those cells that had it.

I've tried copying the data to another spreadsheet (copy-paste values), then
re-conditionally formatting the data, and when I get to a certain number of
cells that have CF, it won't save any more (I start getting the error again).

Weird stuff. I wonder if there's a limit to this conditional formatting I'm
able to utilize. I've attempting 256 lines with 16 columns for a total of
less than 1000 cells total.
