How do I deselect some portion in a range of cells without deselecting the
entire range and reselecting the desired cells?

Try holding down the Shift key and pressing one of the up, down, left, right arrow keys.

Unfortunately Excel has no built-in method for this.

Chip Pearson has written code for de-selecting a cell or cells from a selection.
