Default Highlight selected area

When I select an area in Excel (either with Shift or Ctrl) it doesn't
highlight it. It puts a border around it (Shift only) and highlights the row
and column numbers but doesn't actually highlight what is in the selection.
Does anyone know if this is an option somewhere?

Did you try pushing CTRL and Shift at the same time? After you do
this, you use the arrow keys. It goes until it runs into a non empty
cell.
Hope this helps,
Jay

What version are you using?
I have 2003, and for me it works. It fills the area inside the border with a
light, fairly transparent shade of grey. It's not the orange from the row
selectors but it does change from the standard white.
Maybe your colour scheme is set up in a way that makes this invisible.

I'm using Excel 2007 and it may be to do with some colour scheme options - I
just don't know which ones!!!

Did you learn how to change the color of the highlight option or maybe select
how dark the highlight shows up?
