Default Shared Workbooks display 'locked for editing' when they are not

We have a situation where multiple users access shared excel workbooks over
an open network share. Sporadically, these files become locked and
thereafter no one can access them. Usually the files 'unlock' after a day or
two on their own.

The files get locked randomly by various users, files range in size from
500K to 20MB, office 2003 in a windows domain.

If anyone has any idea as to the cause of this one and a remedy, we'd
greatly appreciate it.

Normally this message will appear when someone else on your network has the
file open. You will be able to access it read-only but will not be able to
save it under the same file name.

Hope this helps,

these are shared workbooks... more than one person can work on them at the
same time... the issue is that no users have these sheets open and we still
the 'locked for editing' message when trying to open it.

Kind regards

no solution yet... we've had to disconnect connections to the share on the
server to work around this issue...
