Default Refresh all in Excel

When I use 'refresh all' on the External Data toolbar, it only refreshes the
external data page, and not the adjoining pivot table. I need to click
'refresh' on the pivot toolbar as well in order for the pivot to display the
new information.

How can I get around this two-step?

You could easily record a macro to do both for you. This should help:
