Default how do i turn off auto fill?

every time i try to type "5-8", excel automatically replaces it with
"05-Aug". I've been into the options tab and turned off auto fill, but this
didn't solve the problem. How can I stop this from happening?

Autofill isn't your problem, the cell you are using is formatted as a date.
Change the format to general

Excel is assuming your number 5-8 as date.

1. Right-click on the Column Heading (e.g. A, B, C to select entire column
or made a particular selection as required) and choose Properties.
2. From General tab choose Text as Category and click Ok.

Hope this help, let us know!

As RajKohli says, format cell as text OR input as '5-8
