i have an Excel 2000 spreadsheet, which has the following in the header
'Microsoft Excel - filename [group]'

I can modify cells, but when i try to modify boxes created with the draw
toolbar, a black and white stop sign is displayed.

Can anyone tell me what i have done and more importantly, how do i get rid
of the [group]

You have more than one sheet selected. Either select any sheet that
you don't currently have selected (you'll be able to tell the
difference from the colours of their tabs unless they're all
selected), or right click on a sheet tab and select "Ungroup Sheets".

Also a good idea to make note of which sheets were "grouped" and browse
through them looking for changes you may have inadvertantly made.

Any changes made to one sheet will have been done to all sheets in the group.

That includes formatting changes and data entry among others.
