Default Formatting on imported data (Excel 2003)

I have recently upgraded to Excel 2003 from 2000 . I am exporting data from
a business application which imports it directly to Excel. When the data is
opened the the number formatting in two columns look like this:

T4151xt (value in cell 9/29/4151)
T2182xt (value in cell 6/25/2182)

The numbers should be:
822434
103176

This is not a problem when the data is exported to Excel 2000 version - the
numbers look fine. I have to reapply the number format to get the correct
data to display. Is there a setting I need to change? An update I'm
missing.

Thanks,

Marsha
