Default How can I add a footnote or comment to a data point in a chart?

Is it possible to create one's own text for a specific data point in a line
chart? (e.g. a word or two that is not in the data table) I can add a note
below the chart in a worksheet, but would like something that would stay with
the chart itself.

Thumbs up Answer: How can I add a footnote or comment to a data point in a chart?

Adding Footnotes or Comments to Data Points in Excel Charts

1. Select the data point in the chart.
  1. Right-click on the data point and select "Add Data Label".
  2. Click on the label to select it.
  3. Right-click on the label and select "Format Data Label".
  4. Check the box next to "Value From Cells".
  5. Click on the "Select Range" button and select the cell that contains the text.
  6. Click "OK" to close the "Format Data Labels" pane.

If you want to add your own text that is not in the data table, you can add a new data series to the chart:

1. Select the chart.
2. Click on the "Chart Design" tab.
3. Click on the "Select Data" button.
4. Click on the "Add" button under "Legend Entries (Series)".
5. Enter a name for the new series in the "Series Name" field.
6. In the "Series Values" field, enter the value that corresponds to the data point.
7. Click "OK" to close the "Edit Series" dialog box.
8. The new series will appear in the "Select Data Source" dialog box. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
9. Right-click on the new series in the chart and select "Add Data Labels".
10. Click on the label to select it.
11. Right-click on the label and select "Format Data Label".
12. Check the box next to "Value".
13. Enter the text you want to use as the footnote or comment in the "Value" field.
14. Click "OK" to close the "Format Data Labels" pane.

Select the series (one click) then select the point (another click). Format
menu Format Selected Point Data Label. Add a data label to the point
using any of the options. Select the data label (two single clicks), then
edit the text or type your new text in the formula bar. Bonus: to link the
data label to a cell, select the data label, type = in the formula bar, then
select the cell.

There are utilities that can do this for you, which is especially helpful if
you have lots of labels to add:

John Walkenbach's Chart Tools, http://j-walk.com

Thank you! Seems I was clicking too fast on the label, doing a "double
click"- the key for me was your "two single clicks". Gotta slow down...
Thanks for your quick and helpful reply!
