Default Custom number format contain letters?

I have zip codes plus carrier routes stored together as one
string. I want a dash between the zip code and route,

95006RR24 should display as 95006-RR24

this would be easy if it where all digits like zip+4. nothing
i've tried works. any suggestions?

Phil

Can you use another column with a formula like:

=left(a1,5) & "-" & right(a1,4)

Number formats work with numbers--not text.

Yeah, that's what i thought.

Microsoft should allow this to work, as many of the "numbers" we
want to format (zip code, phone, social security...) are treated
as text strings.

Thanks for your reply
