Get the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack and install it on the laptop with
Office 2003 on it. Then 2003 can work with 2007 files.

Another option is to set the default File Save format to one that is
compatible with 2003.

None of these options will allow you to use 2007 unique features within
Excel 2003 (such as SUMIFS() or going beyond column IV or below row 65536).

Excel 2007 can open, edit, and save files in the 2003 file format.
Also, there is a compatibility pack for Excel 2003 that lets you edit
and save 2007 files.

MS has a conversion/compatibility program for reading the native xl2007 file
formats in xl2003.

Personally, I've changed the default fileformat for xl2007 to the old
(xl97-xl2003) .xls fileformat. Then I don't have to worry about fileformat
version differences.
