Default Lost Excel formulae

I have recently created a small spreadsheet in Excel X and saved it as
a workbook appended (.xls). When I re-opened it and updated some of the
entries, it no longer did the the math. Any idea what I did wrong, and
how I could bring the formulae back into functionality mode? I'm
working on a Mac Powerbook G4, OS10.3.9.
