Default Trying to install on Windows10 PC

A bit OT, sorry, but I'd greatly appreciate some feedback please.

I'm in my second week on a new PC with Windows 10 after 15 years of
XP. (Quite daunting!) One of my first installs was my ancient
Microsoft Office 2000, so that I could continue my occasional use of
Excel 2000, including running the old style XLM macros I wrote many
years ago. I don't want or need the expensive, full Office package.

Directly after installation I quickly tried a couple of XLS files and
they loaded OK so I put the matter aside until now.

But when I tried loading an XLS this morning, I got a message saying
Windows 10 had encountered a problem, or "could not run", or some
such, and saying it would consider solutions. It didn't come up with
anything!

I then used the built in Uninstall of Win 10 to uninstall Office 2000
Premium. (Which it did in a couple of seconds, to my surprise.
Contrasting with the several minutes to install it from the original
CD. I rather expected it to ask for the CD, or ask which program from
the set I wanted to uninstall, or maybe 'repair'. Puzzling.) I may try
installing again, but meanwhile...

When I try to run any XLS I seem to be the target of some sort of MS
advertising campaign.

For example, on d-clicking an XLS I get a 'view' of my worksheet
together with
- a blank window with the spinning circle of dots inside it
- what seems to be an 'advertising caption' along the bottom.

Here are a couple of examples:

I'm baffled by this stuff. Looks manipulative to me.

1. Why would Win 10 now be unable to run my legacy version Excel 2000.
Genuine, or a cynical tactic?

2. Assuming it really is gone forever, XLM macros and all, can I
download just Excel and Word? Any version that works in Windows 10. Or
am I forced to upgrade to the full '365' package for my infrequent use
of those two programs?
