Default Metering Office 97 products

do not use the exe-file of the Product, use the entry in add / remove Programs.
its easy, on the SMS-Server edit the sms_def.mof file
1. look for the section add remove programms
2. enable the feature
3. save the file
4. wait for results on the SMS-Server

you have a table named: add remove programms data.
here you can find the informations.

I have checked the SR2 (Service Release 2) files for Office 97/Word 97/Excel
97. These files do not work properly. I will cross post this on the Office
news groups. The problem is the file headers are not readable by SMS
Software Metering.

For your immediate need for rules to match, unfortunately, if the header
can't be read, SMS Software Metering does not attempt to match a rule. The
error message you received when trying to create a rule using BROWSE was put
in place to warn you that the example you referenced could not be matched.

I am not aware if the Office group has executables available that contain
the correct headers.

Well, I've tried to use the original install cd to browse for the file and
still got the error..

The file that you selected does not have header information, so SMS cannot
read the name or version number from the file.

I get this error for winword.exe and excel.exe...However msaccess.exe does
not give the error.

Is it possible that word and excel did not have header information,
because
I get the error trying to browse for the files on the Office 97 Pro CD?

Can you do a binary diff on the two winword.exe files to confirm they are
the same? If the Browse in the Admin UI read the header, the agent
should
read it also.

Ok, I've installed office 97 on a machine with my sms console and added
the
rule by browsing to the c:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\winword.exe

It then gives me a warning about not having a header and being unable
to
give version and original filename...This was installed from a network
share...could the header have been corrupted from living on this share
for
a
number of years?

No viruses were found on the client machine being tested or the server
that
houses the install??

The version for Word 97 SR2 is "8.0.0.5622". The error message in
your
log
indicts the Software Metering Agent could not read the file version in
the
program's header. Make sure the path to the file is correct and make
sure
the service packs are current.

As long as the file version cannot be read, it cannot match the rule.
The
rule you attached will match the version I included above, so once we
resolve that problem, your rule should work.

Can you also scan the system that is running Word for viruses? A
corrupted
header would also fail to match.

Thanks

Oh yes, when using the SMS trace to monitor the mtrmgr.log file I
get
these
errors

VerQueryValue failed for FileVersion, file C:\Program
Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE, error 0

VerQueryValue failed for OriginalFilename, file C:\Program
Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE, error 0

I've set the file version the the more specific 8.0b and the
original
filename is correct as far as I can tell...

I do get install data based on the current rule just no usage data.

Thanks

Well,

File name: WINWORD.EXE
Original file name: WINWORD.EXE

Version: 8.*
Language: -Any-

Can you paste a copy of the rule you created? If you match the
"winword.exe" file and the version for MS Word 97, it should
match
the
application when it runs. Same for MS Excel 97. I need to see
what
rule
you are using to determine if the version is correct, and so on.

Thanks
Ben
