Default Hyperlinks Problems

I have a similar issue too. I am running Excel 2002 SR1. I have a file which
has links to open other spreadsheet. The links in this file somehow got
convert from a drive mapping to the netwotk share to a full UNC path. When
executing one of these links to open the spreadsheet, it would auotmatically
convert all links within the open spreadsheet to a UNC path. The links in the
open spreadsheet no longer work with the UNC path.

Thanks
Matt

I'm not sure it'll help me (but it may help someone else answer your question):

When does it automatically change?

As soon as you hit enter?
Only after closing and reopening?

And this is just another thing to try:
File|properties|Summary tab
put a different hyperlink base in that box:
(maybe C:\ since everyone has that)

(I really don't have much faith in any of these guesses--I've don't use the
Insert|Hyperlink enough to see them fail.)

It automatically changes - I have looked at other files that we have
hyperlinks in and they do the same thing but others can access them. I have
done some testing and anyone who is running 2003 can open them but anyone
running an earlier version can't seem to open the file. The error that comes
up is the file name does not exist

I've never had trouble when I specified the complete path using the UNC name.

But I usually use the worksheet function:
=hyperlink()
and that has never been updated for me.

A couple of questions:

What version of excel are you using? XL2003 (I reread your post!)
When do those addresses get changed?

Another guess...

If you're using xl2002+ (I don't think this option is in xl2k or lower)
and if you're links change when you save (or close/save and reopen).

tools|options|general tab|click on the Web Options button
Files Tab
Uncheck "update links on save"

I have a file that each row is hyperlinked to another file located in another
folder

This is run on a server and I put the hyperlink in as N:\ etc which is the
drive I am linking to. The hyperlink then reverts to file:///\\server\data.
Which then means no one can access this file as it is pointing directly to
the server not the drive. I have manual formulated the hyperlinks, removed
and rentered. Moved the file and tried again.

I am running Office 2003 in an Windows XP enviroment. We have not had a
problem likes this before and it has me stumped.

Please help
