Default Algebraic functions

I am using Excel 97. I was told I can enter functions with a variable x, but
I can't figure out how to enter:
f(x)=12-8x or
(for x=-1; 0; and 1 in both equations)
f(x)= [square root of] x+1
{over/divided by}
x-3
Is there a way to find a function of x (f(x))?
