Default Fixed Duration-strange calculation

I've inserted a new task that I wanted to have a duration of 3 week. I
changed the duration to fixed (which removed the ?) for 3w.

The default start date of the project is 1/3...the calculated end date ended
up being 1/12...no where near 3 weeks.

I have tried every task type FD,FU,FW with effort driven box both checked
and uchecked. I've tried assigning various values for estimated work. I have
tried setting the duration to 15d.

I just can't make it work. Help!
