Default sendkeys

I am trying to write a simple script in VB for apps that
sets up the printer before each job. Therefore I simply
coded a sequence of Sendkey statements that selects all
the correct settings.

When i come to exit the menu I send the ESCAPE character
via:

SendKeys ("ESC") or SendKeys ("ESCAPE")

Yet this produces unexpected results (opening a drop down
menu rather than exiting the menu)

Is this the correct character to send (as the
documentation suggests)? or is there another character to
send (eg for ENTER you send "~")

cheers in advance
