For some reason, on just a a few of our shared Excel files, when saved by the
client Excel creates a temp file in the directory. It has created somewhere
near 180 of them in the past few days.
Most of the clients are Excel 2003 w/current SP but it doesnt seem to matter
what version they are using.
Any ideas?

What do those temp file names look like?

If they look like 8 character random letters/numbers, then when excel saves the
file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8 characters--no
extension).

If the save is successful, xl will delete the original (or rename it to its
backup name (like "backup of book1.xlk)) and if that's successful, xl will
rename the funny named file to the original's name.

Common things that get blamed for interruptions to this process are antivirus
software poking its head in or network errors--either permissions or physical
problems.

Maybe temporarily disabling the antivirus software would be the easier thing to
test. If that doesn't help, maybe there was a permissions change???

Maybe your antivirus program is not cleaning up after itself.

Thanks for the reply.
It is a random eight character file with no extension. For some reason Excel
is not deleting it.
I have rebuild the folder and file structure and it permissions and I will
see how that goes. If that doesnt fix it, I will try disabling the antivirus
and see where that takes me.
