Default Linking cell formatting

Is it possible to link cell formatting so any changes to formatting in the
source file are reflected in the destination file? The source spreadsheet
uses diagonal borders to produce a "x" in the cell (similar to a x in a
checkbox); I need this to be reflected in the destination sheet.

Any pointers would be appreciated please.
