Default Not a valid Win32 file ?

Operating System Windows 98
Excel version Office 97

When I started the computer we got a blue screen saying there were parts of
a file missing ...I skipped over this and did not request a back up

When I attempted to start Excel I got the "this program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down"

Went to accessories and used repair kit to fix the Excel.exe file
It identified two errors and 'repaired' them

Now I get an error repport stating it's not a valid WIN32 file ..

Bottom line I can't access Excel and my entire work file is dormant ..I've
lost a half day already and I'm afraid I'll do more harm than good if I try
to fix it myself..

How do I get back to 'normal' ?? ... I've lost the original discs so
reloading is NOT an option

Thanks !
