Dear,
I use the following system with a customer of mine: Microsoft Windows XP
Professional Edition - Version 2002 - Service Pack 3. Microsoft Office 2007
is used on the XP machine.

As the report information of the customer is confidential, Ill explain you
the issue in general. Im sure that you can recognize the context of this
scenario.

Starting from an internal web application, the user can generate report
results via the web page link €œDetailed Results in html format€� or the web
page link €œDetailed Results in xls format (tab delimited text)€�.

There is no issue in using the web page link €œDetailed Results in html
format€�.

Lets focus on the web page link €œDetailed Results in xls format (tab
delimited text)€�.

A click on the web page link generates the message €œFile download €“ Do you
want to open or save this file?€� The file type mentioned in this message is
€œMicrosoft Office Excel 97-2003 Worksheet, 110KB€�.

Regarding this action, there are three options:
- Save the file: there is no issue in saving the file.
- Cancel: there is no issue in cancelling the action.
- Open the file: topic to discuss.

Step 01: After pushing the €œOpen€� button, it looks like the system is
pending€¦.
Step 02: I click on the €œShow Desktop€� icon (which is available in the
taskbar at the bottom of the screen).

There is of course also a task available related to the active web
application in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
Step 03: If I click on this task, the following Microsoft Office Excel
message appears:
€œThe file you are trying to open, [Filename], is in a different format than
specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is
from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file
now?€�

Step 04: I confirm this message by pushing the €œYes€� button. The report
results become available in Microsoft Excel.

Conclusion: the Microsoft Office Excel message in step 03 appears in the
background instead of in the foreground.

Question: what might be the reason for this and how could we please solve
this issue?

I think the clue lies in those 2 lines.
If the file is a tab delimited text file but has an xls extension it is not
surprising that you get the message:
The file you are trying to open, [Filename], is in a different format than
specified by the file extension.


I would think that you need to change the file extension used to be .txt or
.prn

(I am not expert in web page links so I can't help you to achieve that; you
could seek help in a forum that specialises in web page design).

Thank you for giving feedback.

My question was: the Microsoft Office Excel message in step 03 appears in the
background instead of in the foreground. What might be the reason for this
and how could we please solve this issue?

We have solved this issue by doing the following actions:
Control Panel - Folder Options - File Types - select the extension "xls" -
push the Advanced button - select the action "New" - activate the flag
"Browse in same window".
