Default chart conversion

I'm working on a large scale systems migration from Office 97/2000 to XP.
We've just been handed two Excel 97 files, each with some 20-25 graphs and
charts, that have to be converted to XP.

When I try to open it in XP, I get a Repairs window with the message "errors
were detected, tried to fix" yadda yadda, and all the charts and graphs are
lost. When I try to open it in 2000, I get a message "the instruction
referenced memory at" and "the memory could not be read", then Excel closes.

Cutting and pasting between apps has no effect (the charts don't go along
for the ride) and I've checked it on several different machines. I'm going
thru the newsgroup universe for ideas, but so far nothing I haven't tried
already.

Any ideas would be appreciated, TIA.
