Default word wrap not working

excel 2000
i inherited a sheet, so am not fully sure all things done to it, but
it seems pretty basic, with just a few formulas. i am trying to set
a column of cells to word wrap text but its not happening. i formatted
like i've done many times before, i.e., general cell, horiz
alignment=general,
vertical alignment=bottom, check wrap text box, but text won't wrap???
i'm thinking there is some other formatting parameter thats somehow blocking
the wrap, but haven't found anything that looks like it??
anybody see this before

Any chance that it's actually wrapping correctly, but the rowheight isn't
adjusting?

If the cell is merged, adjust the rowheight manually (merged cells and
rowheights don't play well together).

If the rowheight has been set manually, format|row|autofit and that row should
adjust automatically (provided it's not merged).

And if the text just seems to fizzle out, maybe it's because you have a long
string in that cell. You can add some alt-enters to force new lines within the
cell to make it look ok.
